Traces
Songs
of intrinsic value
1
Party
Sometimes
you see posters with the letters “Ü 30” in the streets. These are to
invite folks in the prime of life (over 30) to a dancing night with music
of their time – I tried to take it one step further…
2
Juvenile
My colleague Katja told me one day that her seven-year-old
daughter stood in front of the mirror rolling her t-shirt up the belly and
said: “Now, I’m a juvenile” – another try to take it one step
further…
3
Do
Something,
Mama
My daughter wanted to make a trip to Breda /Netherlands to see if it’s a
good place to study. We joined her but my outfit didn’t please her –
so she thought it was embarrassing…
4 Woken
Up
Maybe the song sounds more melancholic than it was meant to be. This song
was written in an open D Minor tuning…
5
So
Close
A new love song to express hopeful expectations
6
Enjoy
Shared burden means half the burden – therefore the advice to
share it to make it easier to bear it
7
Daydream
This is an attempt to imagine a situation which makes it hard for you to
think clearly
8
Let
Go
Another love song with an unmistakable call
9
Eight
great loves
A song for the lovely journalist, cosmopolitan, artist in life and love,
who in his final years was as a colleague of mine and an important adviser
at the same time. It was his house that I gave my first real house concert
in. His advice that everybody should allow themselves eight great loves
should never be forgotten.
10
Intensive
A reflection about how a real love can make you go beyond your boundaries
11
Picking
Up Trails
In the summer of 2006 I met my old friend Alex. The last time I
saw him was at school, more than 35 years ago. Now he and his wife Elinor
and their friend Dagmar run the Sunnyvue Farm in Ailsa Creek/ Ontario,
Canada, producing ecological food. More than three decades after we last
met we talked a lot about absent friends who both of us could still
remember. A few months later I wrote this song about friends I knew in the
Sixties and Seventies thinking about what happened to them. In the first
version the lyrics had been half as long, but became more and more. Sorry
friends, I might have forgotten some names.
12
She
Within
Her
In this song I tried to mix certain memories and perceptions
about the sometimes delicate relationship between mothers and their long
since grown up daughters…
13
Domina
Early in 2005 the German armed forces made headlines because
instructors at certain locations that I mentioned in this song did their
own sort of drill to prepare their soldiers for an anti-terrorist-war –
and I thought it would be good to take it one step further
14
Passing
Outside
Early in 2004 to 2005 our corner shop closed. Winnie and Siegfried Aussen
(I tried a play on words with their last name which means “outside”),
who provided the neighbourhood with everything for decades, retired.
Everybody passing their former shop now, realizes that something is
missing… and the tram doesn’t turn around anymore - it just ends in a
dead-end final station.
15
Clear
Direction
I
don’t want to say anything against superiors in general (I was one of
them before). They try hard to leave their mark and follow a red line but
sometimes they stagger more than they realize…
16
Sorry
Another
song from the chapter “experience from the world of employment”, which
I have the chance to make due to my job. This song is about “loyalty”.
Some superiors consider it the most important virtue and expect or even
demand loyalty of their subordinates in thankless “sandwich-positions”.
But what if a superior doesn’t deserve loyalty because of his bad deed
so his subordinate has to betray him to head off damage from the company…
17
Who
Benefits
From
This?
Sometimes
it’s a useful question if you are not clear about the sense of what
you’re doing...
18
So
Good
When
driving through Canada or the USA you often see national flags flapping in
front of people’s houses. An easygoing confession of national values
doesn’t necessarily have to be wrong, however if it is combined with an
unshakable national pride that keeps people from tackling weaknesses and
mistakes, it’s no fun any more. Then it’s just “so good” to belong
to the chosen people.
19
Miracle
First there was an open tuning, then a sequence of chords and
finally a question that fitted one line– and this lead to the lyrics.
20
Over
When expectations are not fulfilled and
hopes are disappointed, it can be over before it really started…
21
Just
Turn Around
Experience of life, recalled and described in a situation.
Maybe you have found yourself in a similar one…
lots
of love for Suva Schachner for her translation and interpretation
